She is the patron Virgin Mary of the island, the favourite Virgin Mary of the natives, to who people run when they are in need for protection. The church is built on the steep hill of Kastri above the sea. It is a place of worship, whereas many weddings and baptisms also take place there. The miraculous icon of Panagia was found there in 1710, as the vision of a shepherd indicated the place. The marvelous natural surroundings, the vastness of the sea and the imposing religious atmosphere create to the visitor a feeling of soul satisfaction and euphoria.
